Radio Royalty celebrated at Liberty Radio Awards.

On Saturday eve I attended the annual Liberty Radio Awards where the top performers of the South African Radio industry were acknowledged at a  gala banquet in Sandton. The annual awards programme which draws entries from all sectors of the radio industry is regarded as the “Oscars” of South African radio and the stars of the radio industry were out in full force to celebrate.

I was a nominee in the best News and Current affairs show category.

The Liberty Radio Awards ipromotes excellence in radio with a view to ensuring that radio remains one of the foremost media choices in South Africa.

“Our aim is to promote excellence in radio,” says Lance Rothschild, CEO of the Liberty Radio Awards. “Excellent performance and content rewards listeners for the time that they spend listening to a station or program and compels them to remain tuned-in for longer. It also reinforces the relationship between a station or program and the listener, which ultimately contributes to the sustainability of radio.”

“The standard of this year’s entries was exceptionally high and adjudication scoring was incredibly close, but I am confident that the results reflect the best work within the industry.”

For the third consecutive year, Hot 91.9fm was named as the Community Station of the Year at the Liberty Radio Awards.

The station scooped 12 awards in total, including; Afternoon Drive Presenter, won by Simon Parkinson; Best Afternoon Drive Show (The Big Joburg Drive); Best Breakfast Show (Mansfield in the Morning) and Breakfast Show Presenter, which was won by Jeremy Mansfield.

Campus Station of the Year was awarded to Tuks FM 107.2, which won four awards in all, while SABC’s Umhlobo Wenene FM walked away with PBS Station of the Year (five awards in total).

Kaya FM 95.9 clinched Commercial Station of the Year (five awards overall), while Ligwalagwala FM won the My Station – Most Votes award, and Overvaal Stereo 96.1 was named as the My Station – Most Loyal Listeners winner.

Robert Marawa was named Sport Presenter of the year as well as having the best Sport Show.

It was a night of fun where the best in radio industry were celebrated. Can’t wait for next year.
