Last weekend I attended the 2017 Powerade Performance Academy in Johannesburg. The annual Academy focused on South African High School coaches, recognising their role as primary influencers of the next generation of South Africa’s sporting heroes, with over 100 youth coaching representatives from across the country attending.

Powerade teamed up with renowned sporting and mental coaching professionals as well as performance experts, including former South African cricket coach and player, Paddy Upton, who was the official Ambassador for the Academy. Paddy was joined by Referee Talent Development Coach, Craig Joubert, Head of Performance Sport and Medical for Team Dimension Data, Dr Carol Austin, and Robin Banks, a world renowned motivational speaker and expert on aspects of Mind Power and Personal Mastery, who all led informative talks for all coaches in attendance over the weekend.

Powerade Performance Expert topics include: Paddy Upton, Player Centred Coaching, Craig Joubert on Dealing with Pressure, Dr Carol Austin – Developing African talent for world class Performance and Robin Banks spoke about Success is a choice.

At the dinner on Saturday evening I was seated at the table with adventurer Sibusiso Vilane, he started climbing in 1996 by summiting peaks in the Drakensberg. In 1999 he summited Kilimanjaro and went on to the Himalayas in 2002, successfully climbing Pokalde, Lobujé and Island Peak, all of which are over 6 000 metres high, as part of his training for the Everest expedition. I left me really inspired and his story also gave inspiration to those who attended.

The aim of this academy is to ensure that our athletes are equipped with the mindset to persevere through some of their toughest sporting moments, Powerade have teamed up with renowned sporting and mental coaching professionals as well as performance experts, to bring the Performance Academy to Johannesburg.
“Powerade is thrilled to be at the forefront of inspiring coaches to motivate their athletes. Performance is something that resonates with Powerade, and we believe in creating platforms where coaches can receive the best advice and coaching tips to take back to their athletes,” says Sapna Naran, Powerade Brand Manager.

“I’m delighted to be a part of the Powerade Performance Academy. I strongly believe that modern-day best-practice in sports performance shouldn’t only be for the top-end performers, but should also be accessible for coaches at school levels,” says Upton.
“The coaching landscape in South Africa has evolved in recent times, which is something that’s really pleasing. I’m excited about what this year will bring as performance is integral in the development of young athletes” adds Upton.
